Assist. Prof. Dr. Andrej Trampuz

Assist. Prof. Dr. Andrej Trampuz is a specialist of infectious diseases, clinical consultant and head of the infectious diseases research laboratory at the Charité - University Medicine Berlin, Germany.

He received his MD degree from the University of Ljubljana. Slovenia, in 1994, followed by specialist degrees at the internal medicine board in 1997 and at the infectious diseases board in 2001. He completed his postdoctoral research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA in 2001-2004, where he established the sonication procedure of removed implants. Thereafter, he established a research group at the University Hospital Basel, Switzerland. Relocated to the University Hospital Lausanne, Switzerland in 2009 and was appointed as head of the interdisciplinary Center for Septic Surgery in 2013 at the Charité - University Medicine Berlin in Germany.

His laboratory research involves the development and validation of novel methods for diagnosis and treatment of implant-associated infections, including animal models, the emergence of antimicrobial resistance and the development of new diagnostic methods. He is one of the founders of the European Prosthetic Joint Infection Cohort (EPJIC), which includes infected joint prostheses from over 100 institutions across Europe and other continents. In addition, he is principal investigator of clinical trials involving implant-associated infections. He authored 112 peer-reviewed publications and 6 book chapters related to biofilm, implant infection, microcalorimetry, sonication and rapid microbiological diagnosis.

In 2013, Assist. Prof. Dr. Andrej Trampuz founded the PRO-IMPLANT Foundation, dedicated to supporting research, education and management of implant-associated infections. Together with surgeons, he organizes interdisciplinary Workshops on Prosthetic Joint Infection (PJI). In addition, the Charité hospital offers clinical observerships for osteoarticular infections as the Collaborative Centre of the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID).

Dr. Anna Conen, MD MSc, is a specialist in Infectious Diseases, Clinical Consultant, and deputy Head Physician of the Infectious Diseases Clinic at the Kantonsspital Aarau, Aarau, Switzerland.

Dr. Anna Conen received her MD degree from the University of Basel, Switzerland, in 2002. Thereafter, she received her board-certified specialist degrees in internal medicine in 2006 and in infectious diseases in 2008 in Basel, Switzerland. Since then, she acquired a broad clinical experience in infectious diseases with a focus on implant-associated infections, not only in orthopedic and trauma surgery, but also in neurosurgery and cardiology. She is an excellent and well-respected clinical teacher.

His research activities include clinical studies on implant-associated infections, such as the use of local patient-specific antibiotic carriers
